The 25th Infantry Division Organizations Cold War, Peacekeeping and War on Terrorism
Introduction: Since its activation in 1941 the 25th Infantry Division (as of 2011) has spent approximately eighteen years of war-time service during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and in the War on Terrorism’s expeditionary campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. (See Order of Battle.) The remaining fifty-two years have been served maintaining combat-readiness and performing assigned missions that contributed to the security of the United States during the Cold War from 2 September 1945 to 26 December 1991, in Peacekeeping operations from 1992-2001 and in non-expeditionary service in the War on Terrorism beginning on 11 September 2001 to the present. To maintain combat-readiness and to meet and accomplish its missions during these eras the 25th Infantry Division has been organized in a series of different configurations as follows.
1945-1950
25th INFANTRY DIVISION (Occupation)
During the occupation of Japan from 1945-1950, the 25th Infantry Division retained its triangular WWII organization of three infantry regiments. However, two of the infantry regiments were reduced to two battalions each and their supporting artillery battalions had only two firing batteries. In 1949 a modification of the division’s organization led to the adding of an anti-aircraft artillery battalion to the division artillery, a reduced strength tank battalion of one line company as well as additions and reconfigurations of several combat support and combat service support companies. It was in this configuration that the division entered the Korean War. (See Order of Battle.)

25th INFANTRY DIVISION (Pentomic)
In 1957, three years after its return from Korea, the 25th Infantry Division along with the rest of the infantry and airborne divisions of the Army underwent a major reorganization for atomic warfare called the “Pentomic Division”. The three infantry regiments (See Regimental System) were replaced by five infantry battle groups. During the period 1957-1963 eight battle groups from seven infantry regiments served in the division with one being stationed on Okinawa. The division artillery was reduced to one 105mm direct support battalion of five firing batteries and a nuclear capable general support battalion consisting two 155mm howitzer batteries, an 8 inch howitzer battery and a rocket battery. Also added to the division, a cavalry squadron, an aviation company, a signal battalion, a division trains headquarters (to control the combat service support organizations) and a transportation battalion. The AAA battalion and the military police company were removed. By 1960 the Army determined that the battle groups lacked adequate direct artillery support. Consequently four additional artillery battalions were assigned. Each of the five direct support battalions was organized to include one 105mm and one 155mm howitzer battery.

25th INFANTRY DIVISION (ROAD)
By 1963 the Army concluded that the Pentomic Division with its five battle groups had insufficient combat power and the division command and control was cumbersome. Consequently the Army returned its infantry and airborne divisions to a modified triangular division known as ROAD (Reorganization of the Army Division) of three brigades of three infantry battalions each. The 25th Division undertook its reorganization on 21 June 1963. Because of budget restrictions the Army authorized the 25th Division only seven infantry battalions. The division artillery returned to its traditional organization of three direct support 105mm howitzer battalions and one 155/8 inch self-propelled general support battalion. The 25th Div Arty retained its nuclear capable artillery battalion as well. In other major changes the aviation company was expanded to a battalion; the transportation battalion and quartermaster company was replaced by a supply and transport battalion and the military police company was returned. It was in this configuration with the addition of two infantry battalions from Alaska and leaving the nuclear capable artillery battalion at Schofield that the 25th Division departed for Vietnam in 1966. 4th BRIGADE, 25th INFANTRY DIVISION
To maintain a strategic reserve in the Pacific for contingencies other than Vietnam after the 25th departed for Vietnam, the 29th Infantry Brigade of the Hawaii National Guard was called to Federal service and stationed at Schofield Barracks. In 1969 the 29th was released from Federal service and the 4th Brigade, 25th Infantry Division was constituted and activated at Schofield Barracks on 6 December 1969 under command of United States Army Pacific. It was initially manned by personnel from the 9th Infantry Division returning from Vietnam. The brigade was inactivated on 15 December 1970 upon the return of the 25th Division from Vietnam.

The 25th Division less the 2nd Brigade returned from Vietnam to Schofield Barracks in late December 1970 with its units at color guard strength. On 18 December 1970, the 4th Brigade was reflagged as the 1st Brigade and two infantry battalions and the artillery battalion were reflagged to battalions returning from Vietnam. The 4th Brigade’s 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, the cavalry troop, engineer company and support battalion were reassigned to the 1st Brigade.

25th INFANTRY DIVISION (Minus)
On 5 June 1972 the Army directed that the 25th Division be expanded to a two brigade division to increase its capability as the strategic reserve for the Pacific. Hence the 2nd Brigade which returned from Vietnam in 1971 at color guard strength was brought up to full strength and the 3rd Brigade then at zero strength was officially inactivated. In the event that the 25th required a third brigade the Hawaii National Guard’s 29th Infantry Brigade was designated as the division’s “round-out brigade”. The division artillery had two 105mm howitzer direct support battalions a 155mm howitzer general support battalion and a target acquisition battery. An air defense artillery battalion was added to the division. The 1/69th Armor reassigned back to the division in 1970 was relieved from assignment to the 25th on 5 June 1972. The division base was minus the slice of combat and combat service support units dedicated to support a third brigade.

25th INFANTRY DIVISION (Light)
In 1985 in order to increase its mobility as the strategic reserve for the Pacific, the 25th Infantry Division was reorganized and with the reactivation of the 3rd Brigade was brought to full authorized strength as a light infantry division. Concurrently incorporated into the reorganization was an Army-wide realignment of combat arms regiments to facilitate a regimental personnel manning system whereby soldiers would rotate between elements of the same regiment. As a result, the 25th Division lost all elements of the 5th, 19th and 35th Infantry and the 4th Cavalry; in return the 25th received elements of the 22nd and 87th Infantry, the 7th Field Artillery and the 9th Cavalry.

25th INFANTRY DIVISION (Light & Stryker)
As part of the draw-down and realignment of the Army after the Gulf War the 1st Brigade was transferred (less personal and equipment) to Fort Lewis Washington in 1995 where the 1st Brigade, 7th Infantry Division was reflagged as the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. The Army further decided not to implement the regimental personnel manning system and returned to the 25th Division elements of the 5th, 24th, 35th Infantry and the 4th Cavalry, all of which had previously served with the division. In 2002 the 1st Brigade began the transition from a light brigade to a Stryker Brigade Combat Team equipped with the Stryker wheeled armored vehicle.
